Riverside
Looking Great in '08
The
“Start ’08 With Riverside Looking Great” beautification project on
February 9th, 2008 was a huge success, and there are many
people to recognize for assisting in our efforts. Thanks to the 140
volunteers who attended, we collected 134 bags of trash totaling 2,680
pounds, used 20 gallons of paint to remove graffiti, and planted 50
new trees in the Sycamore Highlands area. Everyone was extremely
committed to the beautification of Ward 2, and KRCB is very thankful
to have worked with everyone.
So many wonderful people from
our community were dedicated in this three-part beautification
project. Thanks to Lorraine Ferrini from Original Tommy’s for the
generous lunch sponsor donation, Frank Corral with PEP (Public
Education Program against Graffiti) who led the graffiti paint-out
portion of the project, the Sycamore Highlands Action Group for
helping organize and coordinate the tree-planting volunteer
recruitment, Councilman Andy Melendrez for giving all of us an
encouraging word on community involvement, West Coast Arborists for
assisting in the tree planting, and finally, thanks to the KRCB
Advisory Board Members who assisted in set-up, pictures, registration,
and much more; Brenda Flowers, Bud Fish, Ann Gore, Mike Blakely, and
Linda Lawyer, and a special thanks to Ty Lawyer for his commitment to
our registration table.

Dare to Care for
Riverside
On
Saturday November 24th Path of Life Ministries and the Grove Community
Church teamed up to beautify the East Side neighborhood of Riverside
by collecting trash and generally being good neighbors. At 9:00 a.m.
families of all ages from the Grove gathered together with residents
of Path Of Life’s Family Shelter and Hulen Shelter downtown and began
picking up litter from the areas around Massachusetts Ave, University
Ave, Chicago Ave and Kansas Ave. With over 200 people volunteering,
the groups collected hundreds of bags of trash amounting to over 3
tons, but more importantly the morning brought great conversations,
good family time, and new relationships. The tired and very wind-blown
volunteers enjoyed a chilidog lunch back at the Hulen Shelter with
more time to talk to new and old friends. The success of the day was
not only measured by the trash collected but by the unification of two
ministries partnering together to make Riverside a more wonderful
place to live.
Special thanks to Keep
Riverside Clean & Beautiful and City of Riverside Public Works
Department for providing assistance, t-shirts, vests, gloves, tools
and trash bag removal.
Freshman Class
Takes Lessons in Service
More
than 200 students from the freshman class at California Baptist
University (CBU) did not let triple digit heat effect their commitment
to volunteer service in the community. CBU students worked with Keep
Riverside Clean and Beautiful (KRCB) on Saturday, September 1st
to clean up litter along the fence line on Diana Avenue from Adams
Street to Monroe Street. Some local families also joined CBU and Bud
Fish, chairman to KRCB advisory board and a ten-year volunteer with
group said, “By the end of the clean up the campus and the parameter
of it was spotless! The KRCB staff looks forward to more partnering
with CBU students in our volunteer efforts as we make our way through
the city the year round!
Day of Caring:
Blaine and Iowa Litter Clean Up
On September 8, 2007 KRCB and
volunteers partnered with United Way of the Inland Valleys to
participate in the “Day of Caring” event. Day of Caring events have
inspired thousands of volunteers across the country and this is the
first year United Way of the Inland Valleys organized such event in
Riverside County.
KRCB
provided support by doing a litter cleanup on Iowa between Blaine and
Massachusetts. Twenty volunteers from Riverside Community College,
Sherman Indian High School, AmeriCorps and community
residents donated over 90 hours
to pickup 900 lbs. of litter and green-waste from the area located
across from K-Mart.
Volunteers headed back to
Riverside Plaza and were treated to a thank you lunch & prizes provide
by United Way. Special thanks to the City of Riverside for providing
trash pickup and thanks to the volunteers for Keeping Riverside Clean
& Beautiful!
Day of Caring:
Graffiti Paint
Out
On September 8th, 22 volunteers
from J.W.P. participated in the United Way's Day of Caring with a
graffiti paint out near Martha Maclean park. The City of Riverside's
Public Works Department supplied paint for the volunteers, and was a
great help in setting up the locations. Volunteers used about 20
gallons of paint to cover graffiti on the tresses near the bike bath,
a building in the metro link parking lot near Fremont Avenue, and a
wall near Jurupa Avenue. Keep Riverside Clean & Beautiful would like
to thank Frank Corral with the City of Riverside for his assistance in
coordinating the graffiti paint-out.
M Fuge Helps
Riverside
Each
summer a group of Middle and High School students arrive at the
California Baptist University to dedicate their time and hard work to
improving the City of Riverside. This group, known as M-Fuge is a
Christian-based summer camp dedicated to improving the lives of those
around them.
On
July 24th, 122 M-Fuge volunteers gathered at Hidden Valley Wildlife
Park to paint the visitors center and clean a trail. The following
day, 15 volunteers arrived at the Flood Control and Water Conservation
District to help assemble educational packages. Meanwhile, another
group of 14 M-Fuge volunteers helped out at the Riverside Corona
Resource Conservation District assembling “Living On The Edge”
packages. On July 25th, 114 of the same M-Fuge volunteers cleared
trails, weeded rose begs, and cleaned orange groves at the California
Citrus State Historic Park. Sixteen of the volunteers then returned to
the Hidden Valley Wildlife park to complete painting projects. On the
last day of their volunteer work in Riverside, a group of 20 M-Fuge
volunteers walked the Sycamore Highlands neighborhood distributing
brochures about local watersheds and wildlife. Meanwhile another group
of 15 volunteers painted the trim on a home and fixed a wooden fence.
Thanks to all of the hard-working volunteers from the M-Fuge
organization for your time and dedication to help Keep Riverside Clean
and Beautiful.
CrossPoints
Church Cleans Up Riverside
On June 25, 26 and 27, 2007, over 225 volunteers from CrossPoint
Church met at Lincoln Park and joined Keep Riverside Clean and
Beautiful and City of Riverside Development Department to revitalize
12 resident’s homes in the Eastside neighborhood. The goal was to

Arizona Southern
Baptist Clean Riverside Parks

On July 10th through July 13th, a total of 706 volunteers from the
Arizona Southern Baptist Convention joined Keep Riverside Clean and
Beautiful to make a difference in two Riverside parks. At Fairmount
park, 568 total volunteers divided up to nearly 150 new volunteers
daily and painted curbs, prepped and re-striped four parking lots,
planted honeysuckle near the band shell, and picked up over 500 pounds
of trash and cigarette butts. In addition, the volunteers completed a
cigarette survey counting cigarette butts in various locations
throughout the park. Finally, the energetic volunteers painted the
fishing pier and the boundary poles a beautiful hunter green and
painted all of the park benches brown.
California
Citrus State Historic Park also saw 138 of the volunteers. On July
12th, these volunteers were treated to a tour of the visitors center
before beginning work in the park. The group spent most of the day
cleaning trails, weeding rose beds, and cleaning up orange groves. The
volunteers also cleared a planted in the parking lot to make room for
new plantings. The work involved raking leaves, trimming trees,
pulling weeds all in the heat of summer. Thanks to Ranger Elizabeth
Kettering and Ranger Julian Cadoza for their assistance with this
project. And a big thank you to Arizona Southern Baptist Volunteers
and Team leaders for all your hard work on these projects! Thank you
to City of Riverside Park and Recreation’s sponsorship and staff
assistance, as well as project supplies.
