Take Pride in Riverside - Adopt A Street!

Take pride in Riverside and show your commitment to service by participating in the Adopt-A-Street program! What is Adopt-A-Street? Adopt-A-Street is a partnership between Keep Riverside Clean & Beautiful and the City of Riverside's Public Works Department to enhance the beauty and quality of life in our community through volunteer service. Adopt A Street News...
Phi Kappa Sigma Keeps Streets Clean

This month, Keep Riverside Clean and Beautiful is featuring a special organization involved in the Adopt-A-Street program: Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity of University of California, Riverside. The group decided to Adopt-A-Street in February 2008, and has been especially motivated in the upkeep of their territory, which is located on West Blaine Street, from Watkins Drive to Mt. Vernon Ave. Dedicated to providing a helping-hand in our community, the brothers of Phi Kappa Sigma have been diligently cleaning their street, sending in their “Report Cards” to show what hard work they do, and giving us pictures to share in their story!

Below, you will find commentary from Michael Perey, speaking on behalf of the Phi Kappa Sigma brothers of the UCR chapter… an encouraging viewpoint from someone who is out in Riverside working for our community.

“The Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity, founded in 1850, has always been an organization who likes to give back to the community. With that said, we believe that adopting a street was the perfect way to give back to the community, especially Riverside, while also helping out the environment. We also felt that by adopting a street, we will be promoting cleanliness and the mentality to live in a clean environment. In addition to building good relations with KRCB, we are also trying to build good relations with other organizations like CALPIRG and commence other community events like the Hunger Cleanup. By adopting a street, planting trees, helping the homeless, and much more, we believe in inspiring other organizations too, not only in Riverside, but worldwide to give back to their communities. By doing so, we will live in a much cleaner and safer environment.”  - Michael Perey, Phi Kappa Sigma

What are Universal Wastes and Why Can't I Throw Them in the Trash?

Universal Wastes are hazardous wastes that age generated by several sectors of society, rather then a single industry or type of business. Universal Wastes contain harmful chemicals, which, if put in the trash may harm people or the environment.

Universal Wastes Include…
Common Batteries - AA, AAA, C and D Cell and button batteries (e.g. hearing aid and watch batteries). Automotive type batteries are not Universal Waste. When they become waste, they are regulated under a different law.
Fluorescent Tubes, Bulbs, and other Mercury-Containing Lamps - Fluorescent light tubes and bulbs, High Intensity Discharge (HID), metal halide, sodium and neon bulbs.
Electronic Devices - Televisions, computer monitors, computer printers, VCR’s, cell phones, telephones, radios, and microwave ovens.
Mercury Containing Devices - Thermostats, switches, thermometers, dental amalgam, pressure and vacuum gauges, novelty items, counterweights and dampers, and medical devices known as dilators.
Non-Empty Aerosol Cans that Contain Hazardous Materials. (Labeled Toxic, Flammable, or Corrosive)

Small Business 'How To' Guide Available
La Sierra University student, Daniel Ng, an intern for KRCB, has put together a "how to" guide on conducting a waste audit for your business. It is on a CD and easily explains the process. It includes a sample audit for a small office. Recycling resources are included.

A CD is also available for purchase. Its companion piece, KRCB's "Waste in the Workplace," is available free for download. Click HERE for KRCB's free publication downloads.
