Litter Prevention

How Did Riverside Score in 2006?

Litter is defined as carelessly discarded refuse. Are we becoming more littered each year, meaning that we are becoming more careless about how we discard our trash?  Each year Keep Riverside Clean and Beautiful conducts its annual litter index. This litter inspection is a crucial part of keeping track of Riverside’s overall cleanliness and helps Keep Riverside Clean and Beautiful (KRCB) set litter removal goals for the upcoming year as well as outline a road map for future community cleanups. The index will also be given to the city for their use.

Each year, volunteer judges scoured the entire city and rated 44 major areas in each of the seven wards of the city for their cleanliness. On a scale of 1thru 4 with 1 being clean and 4 being very littered, Riverside’s overall city score was 1.70, meaning that overall Riverside was fairly clean. In 2007, Riverside scored a 2.14 as the city’s overall litter score, meaning that we are slightly more littered than last year. What can we do to fix this!

Storm Drain Pollution Prevention

Every day affects the quality of water in our storm drains. The combined effect of an entire community can seriously affect our rivers, lakes and streams. Preventing pollution is much easier and less costly than cleaning up "after the fact."

Here are a few tips:

·         Wash cars on a lawn or unpaved surface

·         Repair leaking vehicles promptly. Use absorbents to catch spills. Sweep up soiled absorbent materials and place in trash.

·         Clean up with a broom, not a hose.

·         Dispose of dirty cleaning solution down a sink or toilet.

·         Dispose of your chemical wastes safely. Call 1-800-506-2555 to locate a Household Hazardous Waste Disposal location.

·         Apply pesticides or herbicides sparingly.

·         Don’t blow or rake yard waste into the street or gutter.

·         Prevent dirt and debris from washing into the storm drains.

·         Pick up pet waste and dispose of it in the trash.
