Riverside Celebrates Trees is Here!

Riverside Celebrates Trees
is just around the corner, and you are invited to celebrate how Trees are
Terrific Inside and Out by planting a tree! Riverside Celebrates Trees (RCT)
is the largest single day tree planting event in Riverside and, this year, will
feature the planting of 200 trees in just a few short hours! On Saturday, March
8th, volunteers from all organizations, businesses, and groups are invited to
meet at 9:00 a.m. at 1410 Via Vista Drive in Riverside to join the activities.
Volunteer to Plant and
Learn About Trees…
Upon arriving at the park, volunteers will check-in, receive a free t-shirt
and be treated to breakfast snacks. After opening ceremonies and planting
instructions, volunteer tree planters will head out to the streets surrounding
the area to plant their assigned trees. After the trees are properly planted,
volunteers will be welcomed back to 1410 Via Vista Drive for a Horticultural
Faire featuring booths from various community groups, businesses, and
organizations throughout Riverside and the Inland Empire. This
educationally-focused day of “thinking green” will have participants not only
learning how to properly plant trees, but the benefits of trees in our
community, and a number of other environmentally–friendly organizations and
products available locally.
Adopt A Tree…
A donation of $150 will enable you to adopt a tree
either “ In Memory of” or “In Honor of” a loved one. You will receive a
certificate listing the type of tree and its location so you can visit your tree
for years to come. You have the option of planting the tree yourself or having
it planted for you. Deadline to submit adoptions is March 3, 2008.
A free lunch from
Arlington Rotary and entertainment from Ballet Folklorico de Riverside will
round out the afternoon and three winners from the K-6 coloring contest will be
announced and receive gift cards to Target.

Boot Camp Teaches Tree
Basics
Keep
Riverside Clean and Beautiful and the City of Riverside - Public Works
Department hosted the annual “Tree Training Boot Camp” on Saturday, February 23rd
in preparation for “Riverside Celebrates Trees”. Every year, two weeks
before the City of Riverside’s National Arbor Day Celebration event,
“Riverside Celebrates Trees”, community volunteers are recruited to learn
the basics of tree planting during a one-day “Tree Training Boot Camp”. After
completing the program, these volunteers are then asked to serve as “Tree
Planting Captains” during the upcoming “Riverside Celebrates Trees” event and
help guide and direct a small group of volunteers to properly plant a specific
number of trees.
During this year’s “Tree
Training Boot Camp”, over forty volunteers from the community, as well as the
UECC Master Gardeners, participated in two hours of classroom training, followed
by one hour of actual tree planting. The training took place a the City of
Riverside Corporation Yard on Lincoln avenue, and the trees were planted along
the tree line entrance of the Corporation Yard. All the team captains are very
enthusiastic and look forward to assisting “Riverside Celebrate Trees” on
Saturday, March 8th. In addition, KRCB is excited to
have these volunteers leading others with shovels and gloves in the proper
planting of trees!
